Charity Specialism

The purpose of Zubeda Welcome is to support refugees in the UK, with a special focus on providing access to high-quality Islamic education for vulnerable refugee and asylum seeker children. The charity strives to preserve their faith and cultural identity, promote their spiritual and emotional well-being, and help them successfully integrate into British society.

Our Story

Atia Lokhat founded a charity in honor of her late mother Zubeda, who believed in the power of kindness from strangers. After witnessing the dire conditions at the Calais refugee camp, Atia was particularly moved by the struggles of unaccompanied children, pregnant women, orphans, and the elderly. Initially focused on helping refugees through the Vulnerable People’s Resettlement Scheme, Atia soon realized the urgent need for Islamic education among Muslim refugee children, who were at risk of losing their faith and identity. Since 2017, the charity has focused on providing madrasa education to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. What began by supporting just three children has grown to over 60 in five years. The charity now seeks the support of other charities, donors, and refugee groups to help meet the madrasa needs and raise the necessary funds and resources.

Our Vision

Through forming new partnerships and refining our fundraising strategies, we aim to expand access to support for refugees and asylum seekers across the entire United Kingdom, one community at a time, Insha’Allah. As opportunities arise, we encourage our beneficiaries to participate in our initiatives as volunteers, empowering them and providing a sense of purpose. Alhumdolillah, we currently have five parents of our refugee sponsores who are active volunteers with Zubeda Welcome. Despite their own challenges, they continue to contribute by offering their IT skills and translation support.
